The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania is the main legal entity of the Jehovah’s Witnesses. This organisation directs and controls the thinking of almost eight million people around the world known principally for their door knocking campaigns. The Watchtower Society is responsible for almost everything in the life of a Jehovah’s witness; from the literature they read, the lectures to which they listen through to their attitude toward medical procedures and the people with whom they choose to associate. They don’t celebrate Christmas, Easter or birthdays, don’t vote in political elections, refuse blood transfusions and refuse to be conscripted into the military, which often makes them stand out from the rest of society. Less understood is why they take these stands and what it costs them and society as a whole to do so. Concerning is the fact they anticipate a day when the vast majority of mankind will be wiped from the earth so that a small group may worship in the way they choose. The fact they live their lives under the control of a handful of men to whom they essentially turn over their power of reasoning and their freedom of speech is even more concerning. That this sometimes costs them their lives or the lives of their children is frightening. This is the story of one man’s journey through and eventually out of The Bizarre World of the Watchtower Society.

No Room to Move The Bizarre world of the Watchtower Society Mr Alan Butters Books

Based on the timeline you give, I would say we are close in age. I regret I did not write this book. The life described closely parallels mine. Your journey, your hesitation in publication, your honest insights, and your concluding statement reflect how I have felt about being a former JW.
It took courage to tell and have this book published. I should hope others trapped in this organization would read your book. It might give them the courage to take the next step and leave this group. They do not have to resign - they can just fade away from the group - one step at a time. 1) Stop preaching. 2) Stop attending meetings. Just do it gradually.
The mental strangle hold the organization has on its members is clearly described in this book. Alan has without a doubt lived this experience. I encourage everyone to take a close look at this book - give it to friends, give it to your public library.
Alan in the end is not on a crusade to change others, but I should hope his book does help at least one other person to live in the freedom of choice and questioning.

No Room to Move The Bizarre world of the Watchtower Society Mr Alan Butters Books Reviews

If people want to know the truth about Jehovah's witnesses, stop listening to what everyone else says, these books written by other people or someone that his been disfellowshipped. They have a wonderful site now at JW.org. Satan wants you to believe all these false books.
Just listen to delusional way in which these people who criticize this book criticize it notice that they criticize the messenger and never addressed the actual message
What a joke! "No room to move"?? A book that is spreading lies about this fine organization that strives to follow the Bible closely. For those who choose to disregard the Bible's direction, they can leave any time. They cannot continue to call themselves JW's when they practice grave sins, so they get disfellowshiped and this makes some of them angry and thus they twist things and tell stories.
This is a detailed work and the central part of the book is quite scholarly. But if you want to know about the Jehovah's Witnesses in more detail and why they think and behave the way they do this is an insightful book. Told from the vantage point of a former insider with some very honest personal biographical information. If a friend or family member is thinking about joining this group, this book will be invaluable to more realistically prepare yourself and them about the dynamics of the Jehovah's Witnesses.
